Community Involvement

Volunteer work is almost a given in Charlotte County.  This community seems to help each other whenever there is a need. I have volunteered for the following events and/or organizations:

Florida International Air Show - Volunteer Director of Concessions for 14 years

Charlotte County Family YMCA - Board member for 5 years

YMCA Y's Men service club for over 10 years.

Charlotte County Chamber of Commerce annual Childrens Christmas Parade Committee for over 10 years.

March of Dimes Walk America, serving as Co-Chair for 6 years helping bring the first Walk to Charlotte County.

Welcome to my Website

I moved to Charlotte County from Arkansas with my mother and 2 of my brothers in 1964 and attended Charlotte High School, graduating in 1966. Drafted soon after high school and served 2 years in the U.S. Army, serving in the Republic of Vietnam in 1968. I returned to Charlotte County and went to work for FPL in April of 1969 as a meter reader, working into the office to assist customers on the counter and on the phone.  I transferred and spent 5 years in Naples, returning to Punta Gorda in 1981 as Assistant Customer Service Supervisor. I became active in local not for profits by volunteering at the YMCA and was one of the founding members of their Y’s Mens Club and served as President for a number of years. I also was co-chair of the first Walk-America in Charlotte County with a supervisor from United Telephone Company. I volunteered with the Charlotte County Chamber of Commerce’s Christmas Parade Committee, serving as Chair of the committee, among other positions. I have always tried to stay active in the community, turning my efforts to the local softball organizations when my daughter became interested in the sport in 1999. I helped the not for profit softball organizations and teams with fund raisers, field maintenance, transportation and equipment. I also volunteered at Charlotte High School through this last school year that ended in May 2012. While working volunteer work with the YMCA I was exposed to the largest 2 day charity event in Southwest Florida, The Florida International Air Show. The Air Show asked me to come on board and I started working with the Air Show Committee in 2002, becoming one of the Directors in 2003, currently coordinating all of the concessions for the show. In its 32 year history the Air Show has helped put over $2.5 million back into this community through the not for profits that work to help put on the Show.

Personal Background

I moved to the Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte area in 1964, coming from Little Rock, Arkansas. I have 4 children, 2 sons living in Auburn, Alabama, each having 2 children. Youngest son is a Maring Sargent stationed at Cherry Point, North Carolina. My youngest child. Adriana, is a junior at Saint Leo University, Florida, playing softball as an infielder.

Living in this area for so long has provided me the opportunity to learn a great deal about fishing, boating, and other recreational activities that abound in Charlotte County.  Charlotte County boast the 2nd largest fresh water harbor in the State of Florida, second only to Tampa Bay. Charlotte Harbor is fed by two rivers, the Peace and Myakka Rivers, making it the mecca for numerious fishing tournaments in the past.
