Local Insights

North Port

Incorporated in 1959 with only 178 residents, North Port has grown to over 67,000 residents, encompasses 104 square miles and has a median age of only 40.  Less than one-third built out, this vibrant city's vacant land, home prices and taxes are modest--less than most of our older surrounding cities--and now the largest city in Sarasota County.  North Port is halfway between Tampa and Ft. Myers--convenient to airports, the arts, championship golf courses, miles of sandy beaches, beautiful sunsets, restaurants, shopping, medical facilities, dog parks, Warm Mineral Springs, and ecotourism--we've got it all!  Choose from a single family home on an individual lot, condos, one of the maintenance-free gated communities or a 3 - 5 acre horse ranch in the Estates.  North is a diverse community of people from all walks of life.

Coming as snowbirds from the frozen weather and snow of the Saratoga Springs area of Upstate New York, and walking my dogs on North Port sidewalks in balmy January sunshine while wearing shorts and a short sleeve top had me sold!  We sold off our store up north and moved here full time.  We couldn't be happier with our decision to move here.

For those duffers, Heron Creek Golf and Country Club with its elegant homes hosts a 27 hole course designed by Arthur Hills.  Or, visit the Bobcat Trail community and golf course with a fully stocked 19th hole.

The new Atlanta Braves Spring Training Facility in the West Villages area is under construction and expected to open in 2019.  Day tripping between all nine major league spring training facilities in Southwest Florida will now be a snap!

Warm Mineral Springs

North Port's claim to fame is the world famous Warm Mineral Springs--the Fountain of Youth.  Thousands of people visit the Springs each year to soak in the estimated 51 minerals--thought to be the most of any springs in the United States--and 85 degree warm water year round.  Many visitors believe the waters aid in healing their ailments.  Human remains and tools carbon dated between three and ten thousand years old have been recovered from a natural shelf formation within the 209 foot deep sinkhole.  Eight million gallons of water a day flow down a natural run on the surface and eventually into the Gulf of Mexico.  A private medical community is being planned adjacent to the Springs including a hotel, spas, assisted living and private homes to be built over the coming years.

A sister spring, the Little Salt Spring, is located nearby but not currently open to the public.  Owned and managed by the University of Miami, exploration at this site resulted in the second oldest artifact, a 12,000 thousand year old sharpened stake, ever found in the southeast U.S.  Water in these two springs lacks oxygen at 16 to 20 feet below the surface preserving the artifacts within the springs.

More information and photos can be found on the web at "Warm Mineral Springs" and "Little Salt Spring".

West Villages, Venice

The developing 10,000 acre West Villages, situated off Rt. 41 (Tamiami Trail) between North Port and South Venice, consists of eight neighborhoods, the anxiously awaited Atlanta Braves Spring Training facility, a proposed 3 million square commercial center, golf clubs, lakes, hiking trails, open space for environmental preserves and access to the Myakka River for non-motorized boats.  GRAN PARADISO, GRAND PALM, ISLAND WALK and SARASOTA NATIONAL are already very active communities and constantly building distinctively different homes.  The newest communities are D.R. HORTON, OASIS and RENAISSANCE BY MATTAMY HOMES (Canada's largest builder.  Eventually this development will reach Englewood and a new access road to Manasota Key.

Port Charlotte

Port Charlotte is an active community for retirees, families and snowbirds with the Cultural Center a hub of socializing and entertainment.  Port Charlotte boasts two hospitals, the Town Center Mall and many other shopping opportunities, golf courses and waterfront properties with access to the Gulf.  It's home to the Tampa Bay Rays Spring Training Facility, the Charlotte Stone Crabs, and many colleges' Snowbird Baseball Classic.  It's preserves are home to many birds and other Florida wildlife.
