Flourishing Farmer's Markets in Florida
Voted the 'Best Small Market in Florida' and 15th in the USA, my favorite Saturday morning excursion is to our local Farmer's Market in downtown Punta Gorda. I enjoy grabbing a cup of coffee from Java Joe's and a sweet treat at Sugar Island Cupcakes. As a true "people watcher", its a relaxing environment to watch the world go by while listening to the sounds of the grass roots musicians performing each Saturday. An important focus of most local farmer's market success is to foster a positive connection between community members, farmers, and artisans by providing a marketplace for food grown locally using sustainable farming methods and for locally produced hand crafted goods and prepared foods.
Sundays offer another local Farmer's Market operated by the Punta Gorda Historical Society on Shreve St. in History Park. This is a year-round open air market offering produce, meat, fish and other food items, plus many other vendors. Recently added to this location are several garden plots where members can actively grow additional produce. I consider the modern farmers market to be reminiscient of the old fashioned tradition of “going to market”, while providing a “town square” for local small farmers to sell their products. Bringing rural and urban growers and consumers together, along with the tourist and seasonal visitors, embodies the small town charm we so love in Charlotte Harbor! I highly recommend a visit to your nearby farmers market, and I hope to see you at our weekly markets in Punta Gorda!
